Staying Safe & Informed While Traveling Abroad

Last updated on April 24th, 2024 at 06:37 pm

We know there is a lot of uncertainty about traveling overseas right now. With the utmost respect for the citizens impacted due to current wars and protests around the world,  we want to talk about safety precautions everyone should take when traveling.

Traveling the world is a privilege that we know all of us honor, cherish and want to protect, while simultaneously respecting the peoples and cultures we are visiting. It is our responsibility to stay informed and exercise caution when planning and embarking on trips to any destination.

While not entirely inclusive of all travel concerns, here are some important considerations for travelers.

Check Travel Advisories

Before planning your trip, check the latest travel advisories issued by your government, such as the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory.

Destination Research

If you’re planning to visit any region affected by conflict, research the specific areas you intend to visit. Know which regions are considered safe and which should be avoided.

Safety Precautions

Regardless of your destination, it’s essential to take common-sense safety precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, stay in well-traveled areas, and avoid any areas with known security concerns.

Travel Insurance

Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers cancellations or disruptions due to unforeseen events, including conflict-related issues.

Enroll in STEP

STEP, or Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, is a free service for US citizens with the US Embassy in your destination country. This will help the embassy contact you in case of emergencies and provides you with a point of contact for assistance.

Check Entry Requirements

Review the entry requirements and visa regulations for your destination. These requirements may change due to ongoing conflicts.

Health Precautions

Ensure you’re up to date with the CDC’s destination travel health information, and check if there are any specific health risks associated with your destination. It’s also wise to have essential medications and prescriptions, and a first-aid kit on hand.

Travel Arrangements

Be flexible with your travel plans. Conflicts can lead to transportation disruptions, and you may need to adjust your itinerary or departure dates.

Cultural Sensitivity

Respect the local culture and customs. Be aware of potential sensitivities in conflict-affected areas, and avoid engaging in political discussions or activities that could be considered provocative.

Emergency Contacts

Keep important phone numbers and contact information for your embassy readily accessible.

Communicate Your Itinerary

Let a trusted friend or family member know your travel plans, including your itinerary and contact information.

It’s important to research and consider the specific conditions of the country or countries you plan to visit, as well as any in-transit (layover) locations. Keep in mind that travel conditions can change rapidly, so staying informed and flexible is key to a safe and successful trip.
